Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that often remains hidden due to various factors, including stigma, fear of retaliation, and lack of awareness. Official statistics only scratch the surface, as many cases go unreported. Victims may be reluctant to come forward due to fear of further abuse, financial dependency, or the belief that they will not be taken seriously. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. However, these numbers likely underestimate the true scope of the problem. Additionally, marginalized communities, such as LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color, may face unique barriers that further obscure the full extent of domestic violence. Efforts to improve data collection and provide supportive environments for victims to speak out are essential in addressing this hidden crisis.
